Lachhiman Gurung VC (1917–2010), was a Nepali-Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Despite losing his right hand and sustaining severe injuries in May 1945 during the Burma Campaign, he single-handedly defended his post against hundreds of Japanese soldiers, famously remarking, 'Come and fight a Gurkha!'
